A good way to help counter the issue of overfishing is to make careful decisions in regards to the seafood we eat. By choosing fish, shellfish and other edible marine life that are caught in sustainable ways we vote with our dollars. This sends the message that we support sustainable fishing methods, those that leave enough population to reproduce and limits the amount of bycatch. At first this task can seem quite daunting, fortunately several organizations have seen the need for sustainable seafood guides that are easily accessible and frequently updated as some fisheries improve or others decline. The Monterey Bay Aquarium researches and distributes their Seafood Watch Guides free of charge. They can be downloaded online and are updated every six months. They currently produce six regional guides mainly for the United States. By using Seafood Watch Cards you can make a difference!
The World Wildlife Fund distributes their Sustainable Seafood: Consumer Guides for a number of international countries. The Marine Stewardship Council certifies sustainable fisheries and recognizes them with their MSC label. Watch the following video to learn more about their goals and how they achieve them. The Seafood Choices Alliance is an international program whose "vision is a world where all those affiliated with the seafood industry—from fishermen, fish farmers and distributors, to retailers, restaurants and consumers—act on the belief that a healthy ocean is vital to human life and essential to ensuring a sustainable supply of seafood for all to enjoy."
