The North Pacific Subtropical Gyre is located in the north Pacific Ocean. Within this the gyre is trash, millions of pounds of it. This garbage collector is actually made up of two trash masses known as the Western and Eastern Garbage Patches. The Eastern Garbage Patch drifts between Hawaii and California and is estimated to be much larger than the state of Texas. The Western Garbage Patch is located between Japan and Hawaii. The two regions extend toward each other until they mingle in the Subtropic Convergence Zone. Together, they are called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and form the largest landfill in the world! Unfortunately, plastic pollution and other trash is not just a hazard in the Pacific Ocean, it can be found in the ocean and on beaches worldwide, including the poles.
